Giornata Gemellaia 2018

$50.00
Only 3 available

Gemellaia is a barrel selection from Giornata’s finest lots in the winery. Super Tuscan inspired, it melds Sangiovese’s acid and tannin structure with the soft, generous fruit of Merlot from two special vineyards. The Merlot undergoes lengthy extended macerations to refine tannins and then spends 22 months in oak for complete development.

Ratings

Opaque, bright-rimmed ruby. Heady aromas of dark berry and cherry preserves, incense, candied flowers, vanilla and roasted coffee; a spicy nuance adds brightness. Smoky, focused and appealingly sweet, offering intense black/blue fruit, rose pastille and cola flavors that are braced by a spine of tangy acidity. Closes with excellent clarity and length, leaving suave floral pastille and spice-cake notes behind. - 94 points, Vinous

Tasting Notes

  • With Gemellaia, Giornata draws from modern Italian wines for inspiration, utilizing the highest percentage (roughly 50%) of new barriques in their lineup.

  • Aroma of amaretto, black cherry, licorice, charred bell pepper, earth and light caramel

  • Palate is a seamlessly layered collection of black cherry, espresso, and sweet tobacco, hibiscus and violet.

FOUNDED

Giornata (Italian for a Day's Work) acquired its name from Brian and Stephanie Terrizzi's shared passion for Italian wine culture and central California's incredible winegrowing potential. The dream became reality as the couple has successfully crafted highly-acclaimed Italian varietal wines in Paso Robles since vintage #1.

After working for Zinfandel producer Rosenblum Cellars, Brian traveled to Italy to work with the famous Paolo DeMarchi at Isole e Olena in Tuscany. His experience provided him with valuable insights on Italian winemaking and reconnected him to his Italian heritage. Brian also spent harvests working with Chris King at Redcar and Mike Sinor of Sinor-Lavallee.

Stephanie Terrizzi's background in restaurant management and her long held passion for wine brought her to wine country. She pursued a certificate in Viticulture from the Santa Rosa Junior College and a degree in Enology, Chemistry and Plant Science from Fresno State. During this time, she gained winemaking experience at various wineries and experimented with growing grapes in her own backyard. She is currently managing the small west-side Paso Robles Luna Matta Vineyard and does vineyard consulting for one of the country's top young female winemakers.
